The ins and outs of Vocaloid

When I took my first tentative steps into the world of anime, manga and Japanese culture, Vocaloids confused me to no end. When I first heard them, I thought they were autotuned or nightcore, not some computer-generated voice. Whether or not you’re new to Vocaloid, it’s always fun to learn something new about this crazy music revelation!

If we’re going to talk Vocaloid, I’ll have to start at the very beginning; the definition of Vocaloid. Vocaloid, or ボーカロイドBōkaroido in Japanese, is a singing voice synthesizer. Basically, you create a song using pre-recorded vocals that essentially sing for you. Pretty crazy, right? There are many different Vocaloids, the most famous of which being Hatsune Miku, a pretty blue-haired girl whom you’re sure to see if you go to an anime convention.
