Nowadays, whenever people think about game-themed anime, Sword Art Online is one of the first that come to mind.
The year is 2022, and gamers have lined up on launch day for Sword Art Online, a hotly-anticipated MMORPG that lets players connect to an immersive virtual reality world with special helmets called Nerve Gear. Kirito is one such gamer who’s eager to jump back into action, having spent a great deal of time as a beta tester, and quickly becomes friends with newbie warrior Klein. But soon, Sword Art Online’s 10,000 players discover that not only are they unable to log out, the only way they can return to their physical bodies is by beating the 100-level tower’s final boss – death in the game means death in the real world. Now, with no one else to turn to, Kirito and the other participants must survive the game as best they can.
Personally, I did not enjoy this anime. The main character, Kirito, struck me as kind of an asshole, and I didn’t understand why the writers had to make a (poor) attempt at establishing some sort of harem for him. A harem, which included his busty cousin by the way. What was Asuna, chopped liver? Speaking of Asuna, I did actually like her character. Until the second half of the first season, that is. At that point, she had lost her image as a strong warrior heroine and had been downgraded to some sort of sexual object and damsel in distress for Kirito to save. However, the Aincrad arc that came before was absolutely awesome. And as for Sword Art Online II, well, let’s not get into that disaster.
Although I did not like Sword Art Online or Sword Art Online II, I am stoked to see what the upcoming live action has in store for us. The trailer has been released and is shown below. It’s about 40 seconds and only gives us a small peek into the movie’s details, but nevertheless, I am still very excited for the movie’s actual release in 2017.
